Jonathan York's 200-400 Double Helps Lift Hall To First Open Title; Mooney Runs US#9 110 Hurdles; Bloomfield Girls Win

Traditionally known for its strength in the distance events, the Williams Hall boys track and field team showed more than one gear. Led by sprinter Jonathan York, Hall scored 64 points to win the program’s first boys Connecticut State Open Championship. 

Monday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, York, a junior, won the 200 meter dash in 21.39 and finished second in the 400 (47.87)/ Teammate Samuel Sandler was third (48.73). The two ran on the winning 4x400 relay, as York anchored Hall to the victory in 3:18.84. While excelling in the sprints, Hall picked up 15 points in the 3,2000 as junior Isaac Mahler won in 9:06.91, while teammate Colin Goldschmidt was fourth in 9:19.06. 

Windsor was second (42.75 points) and Xavier was third (38 points). 

Individually, Stonington’s Joshua Mooney had a meet to remember winning three golds. The senior set a 110 hurdles Open record winning in 13.58, US#9 time currently. He went on to claim the 300 hurdles title in 37.79. In the field, he won the javelin with a throw of 201-2, current US#17.  

On the girls side, Bloomfield added to its legendary status as one of the most dominant track and field programs, scoring 53 points to win an eighth Open championship. 

Bloomfield was led by senior Laniyah Henderson, who won the triple jump in 39-3.50, tying a 24-year-old Open record. Bloomfield also crushed to the 4x100 title (47.96)

In the distance events, Conard sophomore Tess Sherry, younger sister of twins Gavin and Callum Sherry (now at Stanford) won the 1,600 in a near meet record time of 4:48.77. Sister Liv Sherry was second in the 800 (2:12.64), while E.O. Smith’s Gabriella Hernandez won in 2:12.42. 

In the field New Canaan’s Gabriela DeFelice won the discus (135-6) and shot put (40-1.50). 

The top six in each event will now have the opportunity to advance to compete at the New England Championships on Saturday, June 10 in Bangor, Maine. The event was originally scheduled to be held at Thornton Academy in Vermont, but a conflicting event led to the venue and state change.
