Harrison Witt, Riley Stewart Top Podium With Impressive Distance Combos; Niwot Rolls To 4A Sweep

High school athletes in Colorado waited a long time to get back to a state meet, but got their chance over the weekend on the last available weekend of calendar. 

The meet returned to Jeffco Stadium in Denver for the first time in more than 25 months. 

Fairview's Gavin Schurr, one of the best sprinters in state history, missed the CHSAA meet in order to go to Eugene, Ore. to run in the first round of the men's 200 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials. 

In Class 5A action, Harrison Witt from Mountain Vista put down a huge double and broke all-time state meet records in the 1,600 (4:04.36) and the 800 (1:48.75). 

Kyaira Reigh from Denver East had one of the performances of the day with her US#5 53.27 to win the 400 meters. 

Sterling Brassfield from Eaglecrest held off Cherry Creek's Ky Oday, 10.63 to 10.72, for the boys 100 meters title. Oday won the 400 in 48.00. 

Camille Peisner led the Valor Christian girls to the team title (120.5 points) with victories in the 100 (11.88) and 200 (23.92 to Reigh's 23.93), second place in the 400 (54.34) and a final win in the 4x400 relay. 

VC also got a win from Kylie Bahr in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.93. 

Riley Stewart of Cherry Creek won the 800 meters in 2:09.60, the 1,600 in 4:45.96 and the 3,200 in 10:31.45. 

Another Cherry Creek distance standout, Parker Wolfe, won the boys 3,200 in 9:07.87 and finished second to Witt in the 1,600 (4:10.09). 

Melody Nwangu from Grandview won the triple jump with 39-9 and placed second in the long jump (17-8).

Freshman Lilly Nichols from Broomfield cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault. 

Rhys Travis from Poudre won the triple jump (46-3) and the high jump (6-7).

Michael Bennett of Lakewood ran 37.35 seconds to win the 300-meter hurdles. 

Grandview's boys won the 4x100, 4x200 and picked up points acoss the board to win with 76.5 points. 

In Class 4A, the meet was all about Niwot, which swept the team titles. The girls team rolled up a huge total with 183 points. 

Taylor James enjoyed a final weekend of high school track, helping Niwot with her victories in the 200 (24.61) and 400 (54.61). Teammate Madison Shults won the 800 in 2:12.27, while Mia Prok was third (2:13.68) and Lucca Fulkerson was fourth (2:14.56). 

Niwot went 5-for-5 in claiming every girls relay title. 

Junior Zane Bergen ran a big triple for the Niwot boys, winning the 800 in 1:51.26, the 1,600 in 4:09.51 and the 3,200 in 9:18.78. 

Eddie Kurjak from Longmont jumped 7 feet to win the high jump. He also won the triple jump (45-5.75) and was second in the long jump. 

Avery Shunneson of Thomas Jefferson won the discus with 192-6 and the shot put (54-8). 

Peyton Garrison swept the 100 (12.38), 200 (25.02) and 400 (56.23) to help the Coal Ridge girls win the Class 3A championship. 

Sprinter Drew Morton (400 champion, 200 fourth place) and thrower Mitchell Anderson (discus champion, third place shot put) led The Classical Academy boys to the 3A team title.

Class 2A - Yuma boys 76 points, Cedaredge girls 87 points - RESULTS

Class 1A - Heritage Christian boys 141 points, Heritage Christian girls 144.5 points - RESULTS
