Holloway, the Lyles brothers steal show in Va.

 

Virginia High School League Highlights

 

- Grant Holloway of Grassfield put together a sensational meet with 7.14 seconds in the 55 hurdles (meet record), 1:03.55 in the 500 meters, 24-11 in the long jump (meet record) and 6-8 in the high jump, all in wins. He was also third behind the Lyles brothers in the 55 dash. The 500 was particularly thrilling as he edge out Josephus Lyles by .01 seconds.

- Josephus Lyles of TC Williams nosed out his brother Noah in the 55 dash, winning in 6.21 to 6.24 as both of them went under the meet record. In the 300 meters, Noah (33.89) and Josephus (34.35) went 1-2 again.

- Sophomore Titiana Marsh from Thomas Dale broke the sophomore class national record in the triple jump with 42-4 and also won the 6A long jump (19-2).

- Western Branch swept the 6A team titles. The girls scored 76.50 points, the boys 72 points. Both genders broke the meet record in the 4x200 relays.

- In Class 5A, the Nansemond River girls scored 115 points; the Bethel boys won with 62. Brandee Johnson won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump for the girls. She also ran a meet record 7.83 seconds in the 55 hurdles and won the 55 dash and the 500 meters -- for 48 points.

- Libby Davidson of E.C. Glass swept the titles in the Class 4A 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

- Patriot edged Lake Braddock in the girls 6A 4x800 relay, 9:23.76 to 9:23.99 as anchors Rachel McArthur and Kate Murphy went head to head. In the 1,600 meters, the same two waged another fierce battle with Murphy running 4:51.61 to McArthur's 4:51.96. Murphy also won the 3,200 in 10:38.36.

- Lauryn Ghee of Grassfield ran a meet record 6.93 seconds in the 55-meter dash. She showed her range by running another meet records in the 300 (38.98) and the 500 meters, with 1:11.78.

- Junior Brandon McGorty of Chantilly won the 6A 1,600 meters in 4:13.46. He also won the 1,000 meters in 2:29.62.
